Plans ahead
I hope to use this for my own sense of progress as much as anything else. Having recently read Show your work by Austin Kleon, which was recommended by Ali Abdaal, I have decided to keep a record of my thoughts and discoveries on music over the next ten years. Hopefully, after such time I’ll be able to look back and notice when I learned what and reflect on my thoughts at that time. For the previous ten years I have used physical notebooks to makes notes, and I still find something special about writing ideas down using a pen/pencil, something about making the shapes in order to make the letters/words lets me remember better the content. Nevertheless, that method is not as easy to share and so, a digital version seems preferable.
I hope to post my thoughts on melody and textures mostly. There are a million other places to read about harmony and so I have decided to avoid it. I would be happy to link great resources if and as I find them but I won’t be talking about it personally. Harmony has become somewhat boring to me. After ten years of loving particular voicings of m11 and maj9#11 chords, I realised that rich chords are no substitute for movement, and so my interests changed to the movement of the voices in the chords and different ways that can be done.
One of my goals is to find one piano and one orchestral texture that I like each week, hopefully building beyond that but at least one to start. That way I can build up a collection that I’ve found in the literature and share with anyone else who cares to know.
Warm Regards
